Let me start by wishing you a Happy New Year!
Have you noticed that lately the news has been full of stories regarding depression and mental health? Apart from more serious cases, it’s true that people in general can suffer some natural blues this time of year.
When we are feeling down, feel anxiety or sadness; these are forms of physical intelligence sending messages to us about how we are feeling. The worst thing to do is to term these feeling “negative” and attempt to snap ourselves out of these conditions because we have been convinced they shouldn’t be there.
~ These feeling are there because they should be.
If we were to remove this form of intelligence from our past and present, we would never have seen works from great writers, artists and innovators in all areas of life. Here are just a few well-known writers that have harnessed their depression into their creative work.
* Edgar Allan Poe
* Stephen King
* Mark Twain
* Anne Rice
* Scott Fitzgerald
The Mexican artist Frida Kahlo who’s life story was depicted in the movie Frida starring Salma Hayek, transferred all of her low moods and traumatic events onto canvas, creating an artistic personal account of her life that continues to inspire people around the world.
I believe not having an outlet or a creative focus for our lower moods are the main issue and not the moods themselves. More importantly, low moods rise because there is a need for self-enquiry, an opportunity for true meditation to discover more deeply the message they contain.
No doubt you are planning some exciting things for this year or have already embarked on something you wish to do or perhaps change. My audio product “Free The Mind” will be available very soon and I hope it will be able to serve as a catalyst for positive change in peoples’ life this year.
When you are feeling down, which happens to each and every one of us, remember the body is the home of feelings and signals with its own intelligence that lets us know how we are really feeling. These feelings are far more reliable than thoughts and can communicate how much energy we have, how we are feeling and if anything is physically wrong and even the possibility for new creativity within ourselves or a piece of art.
I’d love to know if you’ve ever channelled creativity from a traumatic event or low moods…
